Grades 7-12: Curriculum Connections

NATIONAL ARTS IN THE SCHOOL DAY

teachers 7-12 the following rationale and curriculum suggestions:

History To study and analyze the composition of artwork from different eras. e.g. Egyptian, Greek, Renaissance... Students will copy one of the different styles of artwork and analyze its composition. Students will relate the artwork they just copied to its specific historic era and list the era's characteristics. Students will write a monologue from the point of view of a person in the artwork.
Science:
Biology
To present copies of James Audubon's drawings of birds of North America. Students will copy one of Audubon's drawings in detail. Students will research the anatomy and the habits of the bird from the drawing. Students will present a brief oral report to the class on the bird studied.
Science:
Chemistry
To transform the first five elements in the periodic table into a rap. Students will memorize the first 5 elements in the periodic table. Students will create a rap that describes the properties/functions of the first 5 elements. Students will use rhyme scheme, meter and rhythm in creating a rap.
Math:
Geometry
To study and analyze the geometric composition of artist Mondrian. Students will identify the elements of geometric design and create their own Mondrian. Students will try substituting different geometric shapes to see how they change the design and effect. Students will discuss the effects of different shapes on the composition of the painting.
Physical Education To learn different styles of ballroom dance and how they relate to flexibility and strength. Students will learn a ballroom dance like the tango which requires flexibility and strength. Students will work with a partner using different steps in a routine to music: choreography. Students will keep a journal of their experiences in learning a ballroom dance.
Foreign Language To learn a song in Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese... Students will learn how to pronounce the song's lyrics and memorize them. Students will use the words learned in the song in conversations about the subject of the song. Students will research the song's history and the artist(s) who recorded it.
Computers To design a web page relating to your favorite school activity. Students will use specific computer software to design a web page. Students will work with other students on a collaborative web site that promotes the school. Students will write copy for the web site and edit for spelling, grammar errors.
